Solid Waste Management in Durham County

560-1200

Trash If you live within the city limits and meet eligibility requirements, regular weekly collection of garbage and recycling is covered by property taxes and there is no additional fee. There is a service fee for yard waste collection. For bulky items that do not fit in the regular trash cart, such as furniture, there are free collection days available. For further details on subjects such as collection schedules, containers, lack of service, etc., visit the Curbside Garbage Collection Website.

Recycling According to the City of Durham's 1998 recycling ordinance, all Durham residents and businesses are required to recycle corrugated cardboard, aluminum and steel cans, glass bottles and jars, and newspaper. For recycling other items, schedules, new resident information, recycling containers, etc. visit the Recycling Website.

USABLE BUT UNWANTED ITEMS Many charities, shelters, and non-profit organizations accept donations of used, surplus or obsolete but reusable materials. Please call the charity or organization to confirm before making a donation. The City also operates a swap shop where usable items may be taken. For a list of charities, shelters, and other organizations that accept local donations, visit the Website.
