Current Legislative Issues
The Health Care Reform Advocacy Committee will be working together with the League of Women Voters of NC's Advocacy Committee and Health Care for All North Carolina to support the "Health Care Policy Council" bill, H1897. Rep. Insko will be resubmitting this bill in the short session.
The "Health Care Policy Council" bill creates a mechanism for planning the transition from our current highly fragmented health care system to an integrated health care system that assures access to appropriate, evidence-based health care by all North Carolinians. It
provides a deadline, requires that the Council utilize existing studies, and it assures input from those currently vested in our
health care system. Compared with last year's version of H1897, posted on the General
Assembly website, the re-written bill increases representation of
primary care providers, adds representation from rural hospitals,
mental health, and advocacy groups.
Nearly two dozen organizations, including the League, will be invited
by Rep. Insko to collaborate in supporting the "Health Care Council Policy" bill.
What You Can Do

Dear Representative,
Please contact Rep. Insko about co-sponsoring H1897 "Health Care
Policy Council". She is going to resubmit the bill to give you that
opportunity. The bill is a rewrite of H1897. It contains an
appropriation and is eligible for consideration in the short session.
The bill reflects the strong feelings expressed all over North
Carolina that we need real change now and that those most directly
involved in health care, providers and consumers, should have a bigger
voice in developing a health care system by North Carolinians for
North Carolinians.
Under our current system when a plant closes, a family has two
choices, loose access to appropriate health care or the spouse can
give up income so the family qualifies for Medicaid. We can do
better. Doing better makes fiscal sense.
Respectfully,
Your constituent
